Locomotive Fire - Saturday May 15, 2004

On Saturday May 15, 2004 at 10:07 am West Milford Fire Company's 2, 1 and 4 were dispatched to fire in a train locomotive traveling north on the railroad tracks in the area of Rt. 23 South and Echo Lake Road, dispatch also reported numerous brush fires along the trainís path. The mile long New York Susquehanna and Western railroad train was finally stopped at the Green Pond Road crossing in Jefferson Township. The fire was extinguished by the crew aboard the Train. West Milford firefighters boarded the train and checked for any extension. The Fire was contained to the engine compartment of the locomotive. Also a four-mile stretch of track leading back to Butler was checked for any brush fires. Three brush fires were reported in Butler along the tracks in the area of Hamburg Turnpike and Decker Road. The train locomotive started these fires as it traveled through the Butler area. The brush fires were quickly extinguished by the Butler and Bloomingdale Fire Depts.  Also assisting with this incident was A-2, A-17 and A-54 from the New Jersey State Forest Fire Service.
